SUBJECT:	State Board of Education Adoption List for History and Social Science Textbooks and Instructional Materials

I am pleased to provide you with the Board of Educations approved list of history and social science textbooks and instructional materials for grades 4-12. The Board of Education approved the attached list for state adoption at its January 28, 2003, meeting.

The Department of Education followed the established process to review and recommend textbooks and instructional materials submitted for adoption. The Department of Education has provided the adopted list, accompanied by profile sheets that give the information used to determine the recommendation, on our website, www.pen.k12.va.us. They are listed under the heading, Textbooks and Instructional Materials.

As you are aware, the department extended the adoption timeframe for the K-3 textbooks and instructional materials. This extension has allowed both Harcourt School Publishers and Scott Foresman to develop Virginia-specific supplements that enhance their materials and fully address our standards. We anticipate taking the K-3 textbooks and instructional materials to the Board of Education for first review at the February 26, 2003, meeting.
