Announcing
the Career and Technical Education Professional Development Institute, August
3-6, 2003 |
The Career
and Technical Education Professional Development Institute will be held August
3-6, 2003, at the Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center. School divisions are invited
to participate in this professional development institute. The theme,
Connecting Education and Careers, will focus on practitioners sharing best
practices that raise expectations and increase student achievement at the
middle and high school levels. The target audience is career and technical
educators from middle and high schools and technical centers, central office
staff, and educators participating in High Schools That Work and Tech Prep. The
institute will focus and place major emphasis on the role of career and
technical education programs in preparing students for 21st century
careers. A copy of the announcement can be found in Attachment A.
The Career
and Technical Education Professional Development Institute is funded in part by
federal funds to assist in meeting the professional development requirements of
the Carl D. Perkins Act and Virginias approved state plan. These requirements
include providing comprehensive professional development for career and
technical, academic, guidance, and administrative personnel in state-of-the-art
career and technical education programs and techniques, effective teaching
skills based on research, effective practices to improve parental and community
involvement and to ensure that these educators stay current with the needs,
expectations, and methods of industry.
Individuals
or teams from the target audience are invited to showcase best practices that
support the professional development requirements identified above. The
presentation application found in Attachment B should be returned by May 7

for the institute includes dinner on Sunday, continental breakfast and
refreshment breaks daily, and lunch on Monday and Tuesday. The institute

Hotel
Reservations (by July 3, 2003)
Participants
must call the hotel of choice, as listed in the announcement, to make lodging
reservations. Lodging rates are $59 (plus tax) for a single room and $79 (plus
tax) for a double/triple/quad room (or the prevailing state rate in August
2003). Individuals are responsible for their lodging bill, including taxes and
incidentals, meals that are not included in registration, and travel expenses.
