SUPTS. MEMO NO. 57

INFORMATIONAL

TO:

Division Superintendents

FROM:

Jo Lynne DeMary

Superintendent of Public Instruction

SUBJECT:

Revised Sample K-3 English Achievement Records

Regulations Establishing Standards for Accrediting Public Schools in Virginia that were adopted by the Board of Education require that "Schools shall maintain, in a manner prescribed by the board, an early skills and knowledge achievement record in reading and math for each student in kindergarten through grade 3 to monitor student progress and to promote successful achievement on the third grade SOL tests. This record shall be included with a student's records if the student transfers to a new school."

In the spring of 1999, the Virginia Department of Education developed two sample K-3 English Standards of Learning Achievement Records. These sample records were created as models for school divisions to use in developing their own achievement records.

The two sample K-3 English Achievement Records have been revised to correlate with the 2002 English Standards of Learning. Attachment A is an explanation of the sample K-3 English Achievement Records. Attachments B and C are two revised samples of the achievement records. Copies of this Superintendents Memorandum, the explanation, and the two revised sample K-3 English Achievement Records can be found at http://www.pen.k12.va.us/VDOE/Instruction/sol.html.
