SUBJECT:	Board of Education Adoption List for K-3 History and Social Science Textbooks and Instructional Materials

I am pleased to provide you with the Board of Educations approved list of history and social science textbooks and instructional materials for grades K-3. The Board of Education approved the attached list for state adoption at the March 26, 2003, meeting.

The Department of Education followed the established process for reviewing and recommending textbooks and instructional materials submitted for adoption. The Department of Education has provided the adopted list, accompanied by profile sheets that give the information used to determine the recommendation, on our website at www.pen.k12.va.us. They are listed under the heading, Textbooks and Instructional Material-History and Social Science.

As you are aware, the department extended the adoption time frame for the K-3 textbooks and instructional materials. This extension has allowed both Harcourt School Publishers and Scott Foresman to develop Virginia-specific supplements. These supplements, in combination with the K-3 textbooks and instructional materials, enhance and fully address our standards.
