Proposed Criteria
for the Board of Education Diploma Seal for Excellence in Civics Education
(HB1503) |
The General
Assembly this year approved House Bill 1503 that directs the Board of Education
to establish by July 1, 2003, criteria for awarding a diploma seal for Excellence
in Civics Education and understanding of the state and federal constitutions
and the democratic model of government for the standard and advanced studies
diplomas. In compliance with this legislation, the board had to consider
criteria for (i) successful completion of history, government, and civics
courses, including courses that incorporate character education; (ii) voluntary
participation in community service or extracurricular activities; and (iii)
related requirements as it deems appropriate.
Proposed criteria for an Excellence in Civics
Education diploma seal were presented to the Board of Education on May 28,
2003. The Department of Education
invites you to review and comment on the criteria that are attached to this
memorandum. Comments will be accepted until June 20, 2003. Comments should be
