SUBJECT: |
Update of Board of Education Approved Supplemental
Educational Services Providers: A
Requirement of the No Child Left Behind Act, Title I, Section 1116 |
The No
Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) requires schools that do not meet the
states Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) targets for academic achievement for
three consecutive years to offer a choice of supplemental educational services
to parents of eligible children.
Supplemental educational services are tutoring and academic enrichment
activities that are provided in addition to daily instruction. A provider can be a nonprofit or for-profit
entity or a local school division. The services must be of high quality,
research-based, and designed to increase the academic achievement of eligible
children in mastering the Standards of Learning and proficiency on Standards of
Learning tests. The NCLB legislation requires states to maintain an approved
list of supplemental educational services providers. The Board of Education adopted
the initial list at its September 26, 2002, meeting.
The legislation also requires states to
update periodically the list of recommended supplemental educational services
providers as new companies complete the board-approved review process. Additional providers were approved at the
February and May 2003 meetings of the board. The list may be found at http://www.pen.k12.va.us/VDOE/nclb/boe/supsrvcs-list.pdf
on the Department of Education's website.
Prospective providers may continue to apply
to the Virginia Department of Education.
Superintendents may also inform the department of such companies that
have been used successfully in school divisions in prior years or that are currently
being used.
