Student Records Retention Schedule |
Section 42.1-79 of the Code of Virginia places the
responsibility for managing the retention and destruction of all public agency
records and for developing schedules applicable to each public agency with the
State Library of Virginia. The purpose
of this memorandum is to notify you that the Library of Virginia has completed
a new schedule for the retention and destruction of scholastic records in the
public schools of Virginia. School
divisions must adhere to this schedule.
The schedule, General Schedule 21 (GS 21), may be accessed at the
Library of Virginias website at http://www.lva.lib.va.us/whatwedo/records/index.htm. Click on General Schedules for Virginia
Localities to obtain a listing of all of the schedules, including GS 21. A link has also been provided on the
Virginia Department of Education website at www.pen.k12.va.us.
The Library has assigned records analysts to provide
assistance to localities. A complete
list of analysts and their assigned localities may be found at http://www.lva.lib.va.us/whatwedo/records/contacts/rma-loc.htm. Please contact the analyst assigned to your
locality with any questions you may have about the retention and destruction of
school records.
