SUBJECT:

Criteria for the Board of Education Diploma Seal for Excellence in Civics Education (HB1503)

The General Assembly this year approved House Bill 1503 directing the Board of Education to establish by July 1, 2003, criteria for awarding a diploma seal for Excellence in Civics Education and understanding of the state and federal constitutions and the democratic model of government for the Standard and Advanced Studies diplomas. In compliance with this legislation, the board had to consider criteria for (i) successful completion of history, government, and civics courses, including courses that incorporate character education; (ii) voluntary participation in community service or extracurricular activities; and (iii) related requirements it deemed appropriate.

After a public comment period announced in Informational Supts Memo No. 99, dated June 6, 2003, the proposed criteria were approved at the June 25, 2003, board meeting. The criteria, as approved, can be accessed at: /administrators/superintendents_memos/2003/inf118a.pdf
