VASSP Conference |
The
purpose of this memo is to announce a professional development opportunity for
principals and lead teachers in school divisions. The Virginia Association of
Secondary School Principals (VASSP) Center for Educational Leadership at Lynchburg
College, with a grant from the Virginia Department of Education, is sponsoring
two conferences in September, one for middle schools on September 21-22 and one
for high schools on September 28-29, 2003.
The conferences are designed for a team of five
individuals from a school and should include an administrator and lead teachers
in English, mathematics, science, and history.
The conference is scheduled to begin Sunday afternoon and conclude
Monday afternoon so staff will miss only one day of school. The conferences will begin with an overview
of Virginias response to No Child Left Behind. The keynote presenter for both Sundays is
Dr. Pedro Noguera of Harvard University.
Dr. Noguera is a nationally recognized scholar on closing the achievement
gap. With the implementation of No
Child Left Behind, closing that gap is critical to achieving adequate
yearly progress. After dinner on
Sunday, participants will have the opportunity to interact with Dr. Noguera in
a question and answer session.
On Monday morning, lead teachers and principals will
be in breakout sessions specifically designed for them. After lunch, there will be a session on
diversity and learning styles that will be applicable to all members of the
team. The conferences will conclude
with a session on Special Education and No Child Left Behind.
Attached you will find the registration form for both conferences. We hope you will encourage schools in your division to attend. Please note that each conference is limited to teams from 30 schools, a total of 150 participants. The cost is $500 per team, plus travel. Each participant will receive a notebook of resources. Registration, Sunday dinner, Mondays continental breakfast and lunch as well as all breaks are included in the conference fee. If your team needs to spend the night, we have negotiated a price of $62 (tax included) per room (single, double, triple, or quadruple occupancy) at the Ramada Inn and Conference Center in Lynchburg.
