Academic
Reviews for Schools Rated Accredited with Warning in a Specific Academic
Area or Areas |
The Regulations for Establishing Standards for
Accrediting Public Schools in Virginia (SOA), effective September 28, 2000,
set forth action requirements for schools that are rated accredited with
warning. Section 8 VAC 20-131-310 of
the standards states, in part:
the Department of Education shall develop a school academic review process and monitoring plan designed to assist schools rated as Accredited with Warning. All procedures and operations for the academic review process shall be approved and adopted by the Board.
The Board has adopted guidelines for the academic review processes used in schools rated Accredited with Warning. Guidelines and a description of the academic review processes can be found at
http://www.pen.k12.va.us/VDOE/Accountability/accreditation.htm
It is the
departments intent to respond to school division requests for conducting
academic reviews early in the fall of this school year. To meet school and school division needs, we
are asking that division superintendents provide the office of accreditation
with the names of those schools having the potential to be rated Accredited
with Warning for which earlier academic reviews are being requested. Priority will be given to those schools that
previously have been rated Accredited with Warning.
Names of
schools should be provided on Attachment A of this memo or in a similar format
and forwarded to Dr. Cheri C. Magill, director of accreditation, (mailto:cmagill@mail.vak12ed.edu) by
mail, e-mail, or by fax (804-786-9763).
Questions about the academic review processes may be directed to Mr. Ed
Holstrom, accreditation specialist, (mailto:eholstro@mail.vak12ed.edu)
at 804-225-3122.
On a related
issue, please note that all schools rated Accredited with Warning for the
2000-0001, 2001-2002, or 2002-2003 school years must submit school improvement
plan status reports by October 1, 2003.
A report on the status of school improvement plans for schools rated
Accredited with Warning is planned for the Board of Educations meeting on
October 22, 2003.
