Algebra Readiness Diagnostic Testing Program Presentation CD

On October 31, 2003, the Department of Education will begin shipping two copies of a compact disc that contains an informational presentation on the Algebra Readiness Diagnostic Testing Program (ARDT) and the program enhancements for the 2003-2004 school year. One copy will be sent to the division superintendents office and the other copy will be sent to the mathematics/algebra readiness contact person.

The purpose of the Algebra Readiness Diagnostic Test CD is to ensure that all school division personnel are aware of the program and its capabilities. The CD presentation contains the following four sections:

The ARDT is provided to school divisions as part of the General Assembly-funded Standards of Learning Algebra Readiness Initiative. As you are aware, this initiative has the purpose of providing mathematics intervention services to students who are at-risk of failing the Algebra I end-of-course test as demonstrated by their individual performance on approved diagnostic tests.

The ARDT, the state-provided diagnostic test, assesses mathematics competencies from fourth to ninth grades in a thirty-five question, computer-adaptive, Web-based application that provides immediate diagnostic feedback. A formula-based number of test units have been purchased for each participating school division.

The ARDT was used successfully as part of the Summer 2003 Project Graduation mathematics intervention, which had a 91 percent success rate of students achieving a verified credit. In addition, over 75 percent of Virginia school divisions have successfully used the ARDT program since its inception in January 2002.

Please share the ARDT presentation disc with the appropriate persons in your school division. For additional information you may want to visit the Algebra Readiness Diagnostic Test website at www.accessardt.com. If you have any questions, please contact James C. Firebaugh (jfirebau@pen.k12.va.us), director, Office of Middle Instructional Services, at 804-225-2651.
