SUPTS. MEMO NO. 187

November 7, 2003

INFORMATIONAL

TO:

Division Superintendents

FROM:

Jo Lynne DeMary

Superintendent of Public Instruction

SUBJECT:

International Education Week: November 17-21, 2003

I am pleased to bring to your attention Governor Mark R. Warners resolution recognizing November 17-21, 2003, as International Education Week. If one of the ultimate goals of education is to prepare individuals to live productively in our global society, then developing and enhancing international perspectives will further this commitment. Accordingly, the Virginia Department of Education is sending each school in Virginia a poster that announces International Education Week and highlights international resources and opportunities provided by the department. This poster measures 11 by 17. The scheduled mailing is November 13, 2003, to each school.

The increased interdependency of nations and people requires that our K-12 instructional program must reinforce and augment international knowledge, and the Commonwealth of Virginia clearly recognizes the importance of this crucial goal. I encourage all educators to assume the responsibility for ensuring that Virginias young people are prepared for todays interconnected world. To this end, as recently emphasized by the United States Secretary of Education, Rod Paige, we must do a better job of exposing our students to other languages, cultures, and the challenges outside of our own country.
