SUBJECT:

Governors Summit on Extra Learning Opportunities

Virginia has been awarded funding by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices to host a statewide summit designed to build and support Extra Learning Opportunities for student success. These opportunities provide school-aged children (ages five to eighteen) with recreational, academic, and developmental opportunities supplementing the education provided in a typical school day. They may occur before, after, or during the school day, as well as when children are out of school (on weekends, holidays, or during the summer).

The Department of Education is hosting the Governors Summit in Virginia. The summit will take place at six videoconferencing centers on April 20, 2004, from 1-5 p.m. The following sites have been identified: Fairfax, Marion, Norfolk, Richmond, Roanoke, and Waynesboro.

The summit will be interactive. Joining me as speakers will be Governor Mark Warner; Secretary of Education Belle Wheelan; and Ms. Judy Samuelson, executive director of the Afterschool Alliance.

I cordially extend an invitation for you to nominate a representative from your school division to attend the summit. Attachment A contains a response form to be returned by March 15, 2004. Upon receipt of your response form, an invitation and registration information will be mailed to your nominee. The Department of Education is pleased to work in collaboration with the Office of Continuing and Professional Education at Virginia Tech to register participants.

If you have questions about the summit, please contact Diane L. Jay, Title V specialist, djay@mail.vak12ed.edu, at (804) 225-2905.
