SUBJECT:

Distribution of Funds for Professional Development Related to Autism Spectrum Disorders

The Virginia Department of Education will distribute federal special education funds for training related to autism. School divisions, state-operated programs, and regional programs may apply for funds up to $1,000, depending upon the number of applications received. The purpose of this opportunity is to increase the capacity of educators, paraprofessionals, and therapists to work with children with autism spectrum disorders. These funds may be used to cover costs associated with travel to conferences and workshops and to purchase materials or videos related to supporting students with autism spectrum disorders.

Technical assistance may be obtained from sources listed in Attachment B.

Funds must be spent and training completed or materials purchased by September 30, 2004. All reimbursement requests must be submitted by October 1, 2004.

An application form (Attachment A) and examples of books, videos, and professional development opportunities (Attachment C) are attached. These examples are not restrictive and do not limit school divisions ability to use Autism Professional Development Funds. Questions regarding this application should be directed to Susan Meslang, education specialist, at (804) 786-9775 or e-mail to: smeslang@mail.vak12ed.edu.

Please submit all applications no later than March 26, 2004, via fax at (804) 371-8796 to Ms. Kim Shackelford, Office of Special Education, or e-mail to: kshackel@mail.vak12ed.edu.

Note: Please do not submit applications by mail. You will be notified of grant acceptance by April 15, 2004.
