Virginia Science Standards Institute, July 19-23, 2004 |
The Virginia Museum of Natural History and the
Science Museum of Virginia, in cooperation with five other state agencies, will
conduct the Virginia Science Standards Institute (VSSI)
again this summer. This five-day summer learning
experience for fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-grade teachers is designed to support
the implementation of the Science Standards of Learning
and provide detailed training along with print and hands-on resources on the
science content and skills at those grade levels.
VSSI is scheduled for July 19-23, 2004,
and will be conducted at Twin Lakes State Park in Prince Edward County, a site
that has a rich natural learning environment with comfortable meeting and
lodging facilities. Participants in past years have found this to be an
extremely valuable learning experience and a great opportunity to network with
other teachers from all regions of the state.
The cost for the institute is $995 per person. This includes food, lodging, and instructional
materials. Virginia educators will be eligible to receive up to 40 points for
licensure renewal. School divisions may
use their NCLB Title II, Part A, teacher
training funds, in accordance with their approved division plans, to send
teachers to this institute. As in past years, spaces for the institute will be
allocated on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Please
share this information and the attached application with your division science
contact person fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-grade science lead teachers, science
points of contact, and other pertinent educators who are interested in
improving their science content knowledge and teaching skills. For additional information, please contact
Dr. Dennis Casey (dcasey@vmnh.net),
director of education, Virginia Museum of Natural History, at (276) 666-8620.
