Professional Development Academy on Parental Participation for Title III
Coordinators |
As part of the Virginia Department of Educations
ongoing effort to assist school divisions in meeting the parental participation
requirements for Title III, Part A, Language Instruction for Limited English
Proficient and Immigrant Students, under the No Child Left Behind Act of
2001, a summer professional development academy for Title III coordinators
or their designee will be offered. The
two-day academy entitled Parents as Educational Partners (PEP): School
Related Curriculum for Language Minority Parents will be offered on August
12-13, 2004, at the Sheraton Park South Hotel in Richmond, Virginia. The academy will prepare the Title III
coordinator or designee to train school division personnel on appropriate
programs to assist limited English proficient (LEP) parents in overcoming the
language and cultural barriers that make them particularly vulnerable to being
left out of their childrens educational experiences.
The Office of Continuing and Professional Education at Virginia Tech will conduct registration for the academy. Materials, lunch, and breaks will be provided. Travel and lodging will be reimbursed at the state rate. For those requiring lodging, a block of overnight rooms at the state rate has been reserved. Please contact the hotel directly to make the reservations and refer to Title III Academy. Enrollment for the academy is limited to 40 participants. To enroll, please complete Attachment A, and fax it to the conference registrar at (540) 231-5182, on or before July 15, 2004.
If you have
any questions or need additional information, please contact Shannon R. Bramblett,
migrant education specialist, at (804) 371-7579, or at sbramble@mail.vak12ed.edu.
