Cut Scores for the Stanford English Language Proficiency Reading Subtest and the Plain English Mathematics Test

At its April 28, 2004, meeting the Board of Education adopted cut scores for pass/proficient for the Stanford English Language Proficiency (SELP) Reading Subtest when used by Limited English Proficient students at levels 1 and 2 of English language proficiency as a substitute for the Standards of Learning Grade 3 English Test and the Grade 5 and 8 Standards of Learning English: Reading Tests. The new cut scores, which are expressed in terms of the number of items a student must answer correctly, are attached.

Please note that these cut scores are applicable only to the Stanford English Language Proficiency Reading Test when used as a substitute for the Standards of Learning Reading tests.

The Board of Education also adopted cut scores for pass/proficient and pass/advanced for the "Plain English" mathematics tests for grades 3, 5, and 8. The new cut scores, which are expressed in terms of the number of items a student must answer correctly, are attached.

Please note that these passing scores are applicable only to the "Plain English" mathematics tests for use with limited English proficient (LEP) students at levels 1 and 2 of English language proficiency and with students with disabilities as specified by their individualized education plans or 504 plans. The passing scores on the Standards of Learning mathematics tests are unaffected by the Board's action.

The Board also adopted a cut score of 32 for the grade 8 Plain English mathematics test as the required score for students with disabilities who are taking this test to meet the numeracy requirements of the modified standard diploma.
