The Virginia Department of Game and Inland
Fisheries, in cooperation with several state, federal, and private agencies,
will conduct Outdoor Classroom Institutes at three locations around the state
this summer. The institutes are being funded
through a grant awarded by the Chesapeake Bay Restoration Fund and will support
the participation of 24 teachers at each institute. Virginia teachers of grades
3 through 6 are eligible to attend in teams representing their schools. An
ideal team will consist of two teachers and an administrator.
Each institute is designed to train
teachers in the methods and techniques of establishing an outdoor classroom and
how to provide a Meaningful Watershed Educational Field Experience for their
students. The Outdoor Classroom Institutes will be held in the Fishersville
area on June 16 18, 2004, the Tidewater area on July 21 23, 2004,
and in Northern Virginia on August 11 13, 2004. The institutes provide
drive-in training opportunities, and lodging will not be provided.
