SUPTS. MEMO NO. 147

INFORMATIONAL

TO:

Division Superintendents

FROM:

Jo Lynne DeMary

Superintendent of Public Instruction

SUBJECT:

Clarification of Adjusted Cut Scores for the Numeracy Requirement for the Modified Standard Diploma

As announced in Informational Supts. Memo No. 75 (April 2, 2004), at its March 24, 2004, meeting, the Virginia Board of Education adopted adjusted cut scores on the grade 8 mathematics test for special education students taking this test to meet the numeracy requirements of the modified standard diploma. Special education students achieving a scale score of 360 on the grade 8 mathematics tests should be considered to have met the numeracy requirements of the modified standard diploma. This decision was only for the regular grade 8 mathematics test and did not apply to other mathematics tests such as the Algebra I end-of-course test or the Plain English Grade 8 Mathematics Test.

As announced in Informational Supts. Memo No. 106 (May 21, 2004), at its April 28, 2004, meeting, the Board of Education adopted cut scores for the Standards of Learning Plain English Grade 8 mathematics test. For this test, the Board set a cut score of 32 for both Pass/Proficient which is assigned a scaled score of 400 and for the score required to meet the numeracy requirements of the modified standard diploma. Therefore, students need a 400 scaled score to meet the numeracy requirement of the modified standard diploma if the Standards of Learning Plain English Grade 8 mathematics test is used.

Questions about the scaled scores for the numeracy requirement of the modified standard diploma should be addressed to the staff of the Division of Assessment and Reporting at (804) 225-2102 or e-mail darfax@mail.vak12ed.edu.
