SUBJECT:	Regional Training: Discipline, Crime, and Violence Data Reporting

The purpose of this memo is to provide information on regional training related to the collection and reporting of discipline, crime, and violence data. Data are submitted by all school divisions to meet the reporting requirements for the following:

• Safety indicators for the state School Performance Report Card
• The state crime and violence report as required in 22.1-280.1, Code of Virginia
• The federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) report on suspension/expulsion of students with disabilities
• The federal Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act
• The federal Gun-Free Schools Act

During the training sessions, department staff will address the following:

• Reporting requirements for the Safe and Drug-Free Schools Act and the Gun-Free Schools Act
• Reporting requirements for special education students
• Reporting requirements for incidents of discipline, crime, and violence involving codes and sanctions

New requirements created by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (Persistently Dangerous Schools)

• Demonstration of the new Web submission data collection system
• Maintenance, reporting and, processing of data (procedures involving collecting, submitting, and verifying data)
• Questions and answers
• Evaluation

These sessions are designed to provide information on the Department of Educations combined discipline data reporting process. It is recommended that participants include school division discipline contact persons, building administrators, data administrators, Safe and Drug-Free Schools coordinators, school resource officers, school security coordinators, and other individuals at the building or division level who are directly involved with the collection and submission of these data (e.g., technology staff, data entry staff).

Training sessions will be conducted in the four locations listed below on the dates shown. Participants may attend any session that is most convenient for them.
