INFORMATIONAL

TO:

Division Superintendents

FROM:

Jo Lynne DeMary

Superintendent of Public Instruction

SUBJECT:

International Education Week: November 15-19, 2004

I am pleased to bring to your attention Governor Mark R. Warners Certificate of Recognition designating November 15-19, 2004, as International Education Week. Since one of the ultimate goals of education is to prepare individuals to live productively in our global society, then developing and enhancing international perspectives will further this commitment.

The increased interdependency of nations and peoples requires that our K-12 instructional program reinforce and augment international knowledge, and the Commonwealth of Virginia clearly recognizes the importance of this crucial goal. All educators are charged with the responsibility for ensuring that Virginias young people are prepared for todays interconnected world. To this end, as recently emphasized by United States Secretary of Education Rod Paige, we must do a better job of exposing our students to other languages, cultures, and the challenges outside our own country.

For more information, please contact Beverly Thurston (bthursto@pen.k12.va.us), history and social science and international education coordinator, Office of Middle Instructional Services, at (804) 225-2893 or visit the United States Department of Education website at http://exchanges.state.gov/iew/.
