SUBJECT: |
Student Data Collection for Children and Youth Experiencing Homelessness |
The purpose of this
memorandum is to remind school divisions that data collection to document all
students identified as children and youth experiencing homelessness during the
2004-05 school year is required by the United States Department of Education
and to provide the forms that must be used. The supplemental report described
below should be received by Project HOPE-Virginia by September 1, 2005. To provide accurate information, school
divisions should be collecting this information throughout the 2004-05 school
year.
Reporting
Requirements
School divisions that do not
receive direct McKinney-Vento funding as subgrantees with Project HOPE-Virginia
should complete the attached two-page
form. Non-subgrantees should note that
information already being reported to the Virginia Department of Education is
reflected by shaded boxes. This information need not be duplicated and will be
accessed from your student record collection. In order to provide an
annual count, the end-of-year report to the Virginia Department of Education
should include all students
identified as homeless throughout the school year. Subgrantees must submit the
more detailed five-page form that is
attached as part of their annual report.
A
subsequent memo will be sent to request the submission of these data and
completion of the appropriate form for your school division. Project
HOPE-Virginia will provide an electronic submission option this year. Local
homeless education liaisons who assist in the collection of this data are
encouraged to participate in forthcoming training opportunities provided by
Project HOPE-Virginia. These sessions
will present the appropriate methods for the identification and documentation of
students experiencing homelessness.
