ADMINISTRATIVE

TO:

Division Superintendents

FROM:

Jo Lynne DeMary

Superintendent of Public Instruction

SUBJECT:

Submission of 2006 - 2011 Local Plans for the Education of the Gifted

The Regulations Governing Educational Services for Gifted Students (8 VAC 20-40-10 through 8 VAC 20-40-70), approved by the Virginia Board of Education in 1993, require school divisions to submit a plan for the education of the gifted to the Department of Education for approval. Through its plan, the division must demonstrate compliance with the regulations.

The Department of Education has created a template for the 2006 - 2011 Local Plan for the Education of the Gifted. A peer review guide indicates the specific information that the school division's local plan should include to ensure compliance with the regulations. Both these documents, formatted in Microsoft Word, are attached.

The department has developed a timeline for specific activities within the 2006 - 2011 local plan submission, review, and approval process. The 2006 - 2011 local plan must be submitted to the department by June 30, 2006. The complete timeline of the review process is included in the plan template.

Questions about the 2006 - 2011 Local Plan for the Education of the Gifted may be addressed to Barbara McGonagill (Barbara.McGonagill@doe.virginia.gov),
