The Granville P. Meade Scholarship |
The Department of
Education is pleased to announce the availability of the Granville P. Meade
Scholarships to provide financial assistance to students who have achieved
academically, but who are financially unable to attend college. The Granville P. Meade Fund provides
scholarship awards to worthy and needy Virginia high school seniors to attend
one of Virginias public or private colleges or universities. Additional information about the scholarship
may be found in Attachment A.
Attachment B
contains the scholarship application. Principals of all public and nonpublic
senior high schools are requested to assist in making students aware of the
scholarship opportunity. In the past
years, each scholarship was in the amount of $2,000 per year for four years,
provided the student continues to meet the scholarship requirements.
Interested students
are asked to submit scholarship applications to their high school principals by
March 14, 2005. Each public school
principal will submit all applications received to the superintendent of the
division. Private schools will submit
their applications to their own associations.
These applications should be received in the superintendents and
associations offices by March 29, 2005.
Each division
superintendent will review the applications received and select the five most
qualified high school seniors in his or her division. The division superintendent will forward these five applications
to the chairperson of his or her regional study group screening committee
(Attachment C) by April 14, 2005. Each
chairperson will submit the five best applications to the Virginia Department
of Education by April 29, 2005. Private
school and home-school associations also will be asked to submit their five
best applications to the Virginia Department of Education by April 29,
2005. All applications are to be mailed
