SUBJECT:

Virginia Middle School Teacher Corps Teacher Recruitment and Application

The Virginia Department of Education is pleased to announce the recruitment of teachers to the Virginia Middle School Teacher Corps in response to Governor Warners Education for a Lifetime initiative. The Virginia Middle School Teacher Corps is designed to help middle schools at-risk in mathematics improve student achievement in that subject, strengthen their mathematics programs, and help fill their teaching vacancies.

The Teacher Corps will provide the structure and incentives to place up to 69 qualified mathematics teachers in middle schools that have been designated as at risk in mathematics by virtue of being either accredited with warning in mathematics or not meeting the Annual Measurable Objectives (AMOs) in mathematics performance as required for Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. This program was previously announced in Superintendents Memorandum, Informational, Number One, dated January 9, 2004.

We are seeking dynamic teachers who have demonstrated success in teaching mathematics in challenging environments and be willing to teach sixth-, seventh-, or eighth-grade mathematics. They will typically remain on assignment to the school for three years, most likely in a school or school division other than the one in which they are currently working. Members of the Teacher Corps are eligible for a $10,000 salary differential from the participating school division.

Additional information about the program and an application to participate as a teacher in the Teacher Corps is available at http://www.doe.virginia.gov/VDOE/Instruction/OCP/teachercorps.html. If you have questions about the Virginia Middle School Teacher Corps, please contact Connie Fisher, Office of Program Administration and Accountability, at (804) 371-7583, or by e-mail at connie.fisher@doe.virginia.gov.
