SUBJECT: |
Reporting of Abused or Neglected Children to the Appropriate Authorities |
The Department of Education has recently received
correspondence from the Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS) that
should be shared with all entities mandated to report information regarding
child abuse or neglect. The information
provided by VDSS pertains to Title 63.2, of the Code of Virginia, and
relates to the definition of child abuse.
A copy of the VDSS memorandum, which outlines changes to the definition
of an abused and neglected child, as outlined in 63.2-100
of the Code of Virginia, is attached.
Please note that information regarding the reporting
of abused and neglected children can also be found in the Child Protective
Services policy manual issued by VDSS.
This manual is available by accessing the following link: http://www.dss.state.va.us/files/division/dfs/cps/policy/policy.pdf.
VDSS advises that, if questions exist as to whether
a child is being abused or neglected, local child protective services personnel
should be contacted immediately for consultation. Reports can also be made to the VDSS 24-hour hotline at
1-800-552-7096.
