Review of the K-12 Fine Arts Standards
of Learning: Seeking Input from the School Community |
The Board of Education at its May 25,
2005, meeting directed the Department of Education to proceed this spring with
the review of the Fine Arts Standards of Learning, consistent with the schedule
adopted by the board in September 2000.
It is anticipated that the standards review will be completed before
June 2006.
An important part of this review process
for the Fine Arts Standards of Learning is the solicitation of comments from
classroom teachers, administrators, curriculum supervisors, fine arts
educators, and others who have worked with the current standards. Please inform personnel in your school
division that forms for comments regarding the current standards are located on
the Virginia Department of Education website at
http://www.doe.virginia.gov/VDOE/SOLcommentforms/.
Comments will be received at this
address from May 27, 2005, until June 27, 2005.
The Department of Education is also
seeking nominations from division superintendents for individuals who are
qualified and available to serve on committees to review the standards for
dance arts, music, theatre arts, and visual arts during the summer of 2005. Nominees should be teachers, principals,
administrators, content specialists, or other educators who have knowledge of
the content areas and experience with standards development.
Dance arts, music, and visual arts committee members will be asked to review information related to their content areas prior to convening for a two-day meeting on July 25-26, 2005, to review the Standards of Learning. Theatre arts committee members will be asked to review information related to their content area prior to convening for a four-day meeting on July 25-28, 2005, to review the Standards of Learning, and to draft proposed standards for Theatre III and Theatre IV levels of study. Committee members who are not under contract with a school division will receive a stipend. The Department of Education will cover expenses for mileage, meals, and lodging related to the review process.
A nomination form is attached to be
duplicated as needed for interested individuals. Please return nomination forms by June 10, 2005. Committee members will be notified on or
before June 17, 2005. Committee members
will be selected on the basis of grade-level expertise and experience in the
fine arts and balanced regional representation.

Arts Standards of Learning review, please contact Cheryle C. Gardner (Cherry.Gardner@doe.virginia.gov),
