SUBJECT:

Committee to Advise the Department of Education on the Appropriate Content for Numeracy and Literacy Assessments for Students with Disabilities Pursuing the Modified Standard Diploma

 

 

The Department of Education is considering recommending to the Virginia Board of Education new assessments to verify the literacy and numeracy skills of students with disabilities who are pursuing a modified standard diploma. As a first step in this process, the Division of Assessment and Reporting and the Division of Special Education and Student Services are seeking nominations for membership on literacy and numeracy review committees. Approximately 15 - 20 special and general education teachers will be convened to review the English and mathematics Standards of Learning and recommend to the Department those standards that are representative of numeracy and literacy for students with disabilities who are pursuing a modified standard diploma.

Committee Criteria

Committee members will be chosen based on the following criteria:

 

        Special education teachers who have successful experience teaching students with disabilities at the middle and high school level in English;

        Special education teachers who have successful experience teaching students with disabilities at the middle and high school level in mathematics;

        General education teachers who have successful experience teaching students with disabilities at the middle and high school levels in English;

        General education teachers who have successful experience teaching students with disabilities at the middle and high school levels in mathematics;

        Career and Technical Education teachers who have successful experience teaching students with disabilities at the middle and high school levels; and

        Balanced regional representation.

 

The literacy committee will meet on July 19, 2005, and the numeracy committee will meet on July 20, 2005, in the Richmond area.

 

Provisions for Committee Members

 

Committee members will be provided the following:

 

        reimbursement for meals and travel expenses in accordance with state travel policy and guidelines;

        lodging;

        honorarium of $50 per meeting day for committee members not under contract with a school division at the time of the meeting; and

        certificate for recertification points.

 

Individuals may initiate the application process for this committee or may be nominated. All nominees must complete an application and obtain written approval from their division superintendent. Completed applications must be submitted to the Virginia Department of Education by July 5, 2005.
