Superintendent of Public Instruction

SUBJECT:

Seeking Comments on Proposed Revisions to: Regulations Establishing Standards For Accrediting Public Schools in Virginia, 8 VAC 20-131-10 et seq.

On behalf of the Board of Education, I am pleased to transmit a draft copy of the Board of Educations proposed revisions to the Regulations Establishing Standards for Accrediting Public Schools in Virginia. A document summarizing the proposed revisions is also attached. The proposed revisions were reviewed by the board at its meeting on June 22, 2005, and the board authorized the Department of Education to proceed with the Administrative Process Act (APA) requirements. Although the formal public comment period under the APA has not been initiated, the board asked that copies of the proposed revisions be distributed, and that the department immediately begin to receive public comments.

The board seeks your comments and suggestions for changes and additions to any part of the draft regulations. Please share this document with others, as you deem appropriate. The board's proposed revisions may be modified based on the public comments received. The board anticipates conducting public hearings around the state to receive additional public comments in the early fall as part of the APA procedure. Please continue to visit the departments website for information on the dates and locations of the hearings.

Please submit your comments to Anne D. Wescott, assistant superintendent for policy and communications, Virginia Department of Education, P. O. Box 2120, Richmond, VA 23218-2120; phone:(804) 225-2403; fax:(804) 786-5389; email: Policy@doe.virginia.gov.
