Readiness Symposium II |
On November 10, 2005, the Department of Education
will host Algebra Readiness Symposium II, a professional development
opportunity for school personnel. The
purpose of the symposium is to provide content-related techniques and practices
that have shown promise in helping students succeed in Algebra I. The symposium will be held at the Hotel
Roanoke and Conference Center.
Registration is open to all Algebra Readiness
Initiative (ARI) teachers/tutors, grades 5 through 9 special education
teachers, and teachers of students with limited English proficiency. Each division should send only one
registration form with all the participants listed. Registration forms are due by November 1, 2005.
School divisions are invited to send a number of
representatives based on their fall 2005 enrollment. Divisions with enrollments below 10,000 students may send two
participants. Divisions with
enrollments between 10,001 and 30,000 may send three participants. Divisions with enrollments over 30,000 may
send four participants.
The division ARI coordinator may select four choices
for the three 90-minute sessions.
Participants will be assigned to those selections on a first-come,
first-serve basis. Descriptions of each
of the sessions are posted at http://www.doe.virginia.gov/VDOE/Instruction/Math/ARI/symp05-workshops.shtml. The Virginia Department of Education will
cover the cost of one nights lodging for individuals traveling more than 75
miles from the site of the symposium.
The department encourages school division teams to share rooms at the
facility on a double-occupancy basis where appropriate. Room reservations for those outside the
75-mile limit must be made by October 10, 2005.
The registration form is attached to this
memorandum. For additional information,
please contact Lois Williams, Ed.D. (Lois.Williams@doe.virginia.gov),
mathematics specialist, Office of Middle and High School Instruction, at (804)
