Applications for Emergency Impact Aid for Students Displaced by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita

On December 30, 2005, President Bush signed into law H.R. 2863, the FY2006 Department of Defense appropriations bill. Title IV of this legislation is the Hurricane Education Recovery Act which appropriates funds to assist students displaced by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The Emergency Impact Aid for Displaced Students is a section of this act for which Virginia can apply for funds to support local school divisions and nonpublic schools. Attached are instructions on how school divisions apply through the state for these funds. An explanation of the application procedure and forms are provided, as is the U.S. Department of Educations Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ). Note that federal timelines require applications to be received by the Virginia Department of Education via Project HOPE-Virginia by 5 p.m. on January 26, 2006. Applications must be submitted to Patricia Popp, state coordinator for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth, Office of Student Services, at Project HOPEVA, electronically at homlss@wm.edu or faxed to 757-221-2988.
