SUBJECT:

2006-2007 Discipline, Crime, and Violence Report

The purpose of this memo is to provide information for collecting data on discipline, crime, and violence in public schools for the 2006-2007 school year. Data should be collected for the 365-day period starting with the first day of the 2006 summer school session. Data collected will meet the reporting requirements for the following:

  • No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB)
  • Standards of Accreditation safety indicator for the School Report Card
  • State Crime and Violence Report as required in Section 22.1-279.3:1 of the Code of Virginia
  • Federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) report on suspension and expulsion of students with disabilities
  • Federal Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act
  • Federal Gun-Free Schools Act

The data collection process will remain the same; however, all five digit offense codes have changed to three digit offense codes. The required offense codes for 2006-2007 are located on the departments website: http://www.doe.virginia.gov/VDOE/Publications/Discipline/datacoll/2006-2007/newoffensecodes.pdf. No new data fields have been added. As previously established, all incidents within a regional center/program and division center must be reported to the enrolled division.

The Comprehensive User Guide for Discipline, Crime, and Violence Data Collection and Submission for 2006-2007 was posted to the VDOE Web site in early July and may be accessed at: http://www.doe.virginia.gov/VDOE/Publications/Discipline/datacoll/2006-2007/comprehensive-user-guide.pdf.

The opening date for the 2006-2007 Web collection process will be August 1, 2006. The closing date will be July 31, 2007.
