Update of
Board of Education Approved Supplemental Educational Services Providers: A
Requirement of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, Title I, Section
1116 |
The No Child
Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) requires Title I schools in years two
through five of School Improvement to offer supplemental educational services
to parents of eligible children.
Supplemental educational services (SES) are academic enrichment services
provided outside the regular school day.
The services must be of high quality, research-based, and designed to
increase the academic achievement of eligible children in mastering the
Standards of Learning and proficiency on Standards of Learning assessments.
SES providers can be school divisions, schools, or
nonprofit or for-profit entities. The
NCLB legislation requires states to maintain an updated approved list of
supplemental educational services providers.
On September 26, 2002, the Board of Education
adopted the initial list of recommended supplemental educational services providers.
The legislation also requires states to update the list as needed. The Board of Education has established a
procedure for updating the list of providers on a quarterly basis. According to the established procedure, at
the January 11, 2006, meeting of the board, one provider was added. The complete list may be found at http://www.doe.virginia.gov/VDOE/nclb/boe/supsrvcs-list.pdf
on the Department of Education's website.
Prospective providers may continue to apply to the
Virginia Department of Education by submitting a completed SES
application. The application may be
found at http://www.doe.virginia.gov/VDOE/nclb/ssp_app.doc
on the Department of Educations website.
Superintendents may also inform the department of SES providers that
have been used successfully in school divisions in prior years or that are
currently being used.

Ghazal, Title I specialist, at (804) 225-2904, or by e-mail at Rita.Ghazal@doe.virginia.gov.
