Procedure
for Appointment of a School Division Superintendent by the Virginia Board of
Education Pursuant to Sections 22.1-60 and 22-1-61 of the Code of Virginia and the Certificate
of Appointment and Oath of Superintendent |
On
March 22, 2006, the Virginia Board of Education approved the attached
procedures for the appointment of a division superintendent that is not
appointed within the time prescribed by Sections 22.1-60 and 22-1-61 of the Code of Virginia. The new procedures
take effect immediately.
The Virginia statute also requires that every division superintendent, before entering upon the duties of the office, must take and subscribe the oath prescribed for an officer of the Commonwealth. A certificate of the clerk of the court in which the oath is administered must be submitted to the Department of Education.
Attached are copies of the certificate of
appointment and oath of superintendent that should be completed at the time the
division superintendent is appointed and submitted to Dr. Thomas A. Elliott,
assistant superintendent for teacher education, licensure, and professional
practice. If you have sent these certificates to the Department of
Education, it is not necessary to resubmit using the attached forms.
Please maintain these forms on file for future use.
If you have any questions regarding the procedures
for the appointment of a division superintendent by the Board of Education,
certificate of appointment, or the oath of office, please do not hesitate to
contact Dr. Elliott at Thomas.Elliott@doe.virginia.gov or
(804) 371-2471.
