SUBJECT:

Summer Professional Development Academy on Parental Participation for Title III Coordinators

As part of the Virginia Department of Educations ongoing effort to assist school divisions in meeting the parental participation requirements for Title III, Part A, Language Instruction for Limited English Proficient and Immigrant Students, under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, a summer professional development academy for Title III coordinators or their designees will be offered. The two-day academy entitled Parents as Educational Partners (PEP): School Related Curriculum for Language Minority Parents will be offered on July 24-25, 2006, at the Omni Hotel in Newport News, Virginia. The academy will prepare the Title III coordinators or designees to train school division personnel on appropriate programs to assist limited English proficient (LEP) parents in overcoming the language and cultural barriers that make them particularly vulnerable to being left out of their childrens educational experiences.

The Office of Continuing and Professional Education at Virginia Tech will conduct registration for the academy. Materials, lunch, and breaks will be provided. Travel will be reimbursed at the state rate. For those requiring lodging, a block of overnight rooms at the state rate has been reserved. Hotel rooms will be direct billed. Please contact the Omni Hotel directly at (757) 873-6664 to make the reservations and refer to Title III Academy. Enrollment for the academy is limited to 40 participants. To enroll, please complete Attachment A, and fax it to the conference registrar at (540) 231-3306, on or before July 7, 2006.
