SUBJECT:

Bullying Prevention Staff Development Workshops

In 2005, the Virginia General Assembly enacted legislation to include bullying prevention as a mandatory component of character education. The[character education] program shall also address the inappropriateness of bullying, as defined in the Student Conduct Policy Guidelines adopted by the Board of Education pursuant to 22.1-279.6.

In direct response to the legislation, five regional staff development bullying prevention workshops were offered across the commonwealth in the spring of 2006. The workshops proved to be very popular. All five workshops were filled to capacity.

In order to meet the continued demand, the Virginia Department of Education, in cooperation with Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), is pleased to announce two additional regional workshops; one in Roanoke and one in Richmond during October.

These half-day workshops will provide participants with information and resources that will enable them to return to their own school and provide staff development on bullying prevention. Each participant will receive free materials and resources including a presentation kit from the Channing Bete Company, Inc., entitled Bullying: Prevention and Intervention for School Staff.

The schedule and locations for the workshops are:

  • October 23 Holiday Inn, Roanoke
  • October 27 Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens, Richmond

While the workshops are being offered at no cost to the participant, pre-registration is required. VCUs Center for School-Community Collaboration will handle online registration and other workshop logistics. To access the registration information, please visit: www.soe.vcu.edu/csc.

Registration for each site is limited to no more than 100 participants. Please plan to register early. The registration deadline is one week prior to the workshop date.

Questions regarding registration information should be directed to Joy Murphy with the VCU Center at (804) 828-1482. Other workshop questions may be directed to Arlene Cundiff, coordinator of the safe and drug-free schools program, via e-mail Arlene.Cundiff@doe.virginia.gov or telephone (804)225-2871.
