SUBJECT:

Algebra Readiness Symposium III

On November 17, 2006, the Virginia Department of Education will host Algebra Readiness Symposium III, a professional development opportunity for school personnel. The purpose of the symposium is to introduce the Algebra Readiness Curriculum Companion, an online document that keys lesson plans to the strengths and weaknesses of students as determined by the Algebra Readiness Diagnostic Test. The symposium will be held at the Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center.

Registration is open to all Algebra Readiness Initiative (ARI) coordinators and tutors/teachers. Each division should send only one registration form with all participants listed. Participants will be expected to disseminate information about use of the Algebra Readiness Curriculum Companion within their respective divisions. Registration forms are due by November 3, 2006.

School divisions are invited to send a number of representatives based on their fall 2006 enrollment. Divisions with enrollments under 10,000 students may send two participants. Divisions with enrollments between 10,001 and 30,000 may send three participants. Divisions with enrollments over 30,000 may send four participants.

The Virginia Department of Education will cover the cost of one nights lodging for those traveling over 75 miles from the site of the symposium. The department encourages school division teams to share rooms at the facility on a double occupancy basis where appropriate. Room reservations for those outside the 75 miles must be made by October 16, 2006, by calling the Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center at (540) 985-5900.

The registration form is attached to this memorandum. For additional information, please contact Lois Williams, Ed.D., mathematics specialist, Office of Middle and High School Instruction, by e-mail at Lois.Williams@doe.virginia.gov, or by telephone at (804) 786-8078.
