The
Virginia Department of Education will be hosting a two-day professional
development opportunity, United States History to 1877: Vocabulary
Development, conducted by the Consortium on Reading Excellence (CORE). During this two-day workshop, participants
will learn and practice research-proven methods to directly teach students
important content vocabulary. Fifth- and
sixth-grade teachers who work with students in United States History to 1877 are
invited to attend.
The
dates and locations are as follows:

Workshops
will be held from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. with lunch provided. Participants should bring instructional
materials for the history unit they are currently teaching in their classroom. Forty-five spaces will be available at each
two-day workshop. School divisions are
invited to send two United States History to 1877
teachers. The Virginia Department of Education will provide funding for this
opportunity, excluding travel and lodging costs. Registration will be conducted on a first-come,
first-serve basis and can be completed online at www.cpe.vt.edu/reg/ush1877.
