SUBJECT:	Professional Development Opportunities for Civics and Economics and Virginia and United States Government

The Virginia Department of Education is sponsoring two regional, one-day instructional leadership symposia for division personnel with leadership responsibilities in history and social science instruction. The purpose of these symposia is to make available technical assistance related to Civics and Economics and Virginia and United States Government. Central office personnel, principals, assistant principals, department chairpersons, and lead teachers who work with students in Civics and Economics and Virginia and United States Government are invited to attend.

The objectives of the symposia are to:

• provide new content information related to civics education by recognized experts;
• examine local curriculum alignment to maximize the use of resources such as Department of Education documents and other products; and
• explain what materials are available to support the History and Social Science Standards of Learning.

Each instructional leadership symposia will accommodate 130 participants. School divisions are invited to send more than one person. The Virginia Department of Education will provide lodging, meals, and materials for participants. Registration will be conduced on a first-come, first-serve basis and can be completed online at www.cpe.vt.edu/reg/ileads.
