SUBJECT:

2007 Great Virginia Teach-In: A Call to Teach

The Virginia Department of Education is pleased to announce that the 2007 Great Virginia Teach-In: A Call to Teach will be held on Saturday, March 17, 2007. The Department is securing the Greater Richmond Convention Center in Richmond, Virginia, for the event.

The Department will advertise the Teach-In nationwide. The anticipated audience will include graduates from teacher education programs, teachers from other states, individuals interested in returning to teaching, retirees, college graduates in the arts and sciences, and non-teaching professionals interested in pursuing a teaching career.

The Teach-In will begin with an opening session and then focus on the following three concurrent activities:

a) interview opportunities with human resources personnel from participating school divisions; b) individual and group sessions with Department of Education licensure staff regarding requirements for obtaining licensure in Virginia; and c) booth exhibits featuring Virginia school divisions, state-approved teacher preparation and Career Switcher programs, and other organizations committed to supporting quality teaching in Virginia.

In the past three years, the Teach-In was funded by the federal Teacher Quality Enhancement (TQE) grant. Since that grant is closing, the event will be sponsored by the Commonwealth of Virginia and corporate sponsors. A registration fee of approximately $300 will be assessed for each school division. Meals may be purchased through local restaurants and vendors, and, if available, the convention center food court.

We hope that you and others in your division will make plans to participate in the 2007 Great Virginia Teach-In. Please complete and fax the attached response form to

Ms. Alice Bryant, administrative assistant for teacher education and licensure, at (804) 786-6759 no later than Wednesday, January 31, 2007. The website for online registration will be available soon for participants and school divisions.

If you have any questions regarding the Teach-In, please contact Mrs. Patty S. Pitts, acting assistant superintendent for teacher education and licensure, at Patty.Pitts@doe.virginia.gov, or Thomas T. Suh, data manager for teacher education and licensure, at Thomas.Suh@doe.virginia.gov or (804) 225-3616.
