SUBJECT:

New Teacher Manuals and One-Day Stepping Stones Institute

The Virginia Department of Education is pleased to announce the 2007 Stepping Stones Institute. This is a training opportunity for school personnel to become familiar with the new teacher manuals, Stepping Stones I: Teacher to Teacher (Attachment A) and Stepping Stones II: Collaboration: Working Together for All Students (Attachment B). This Institute is jointly sponsored by the Office of School Improvement and Special Education Instructional Services.

The purpose of this training opportunity is to prepare local school division trainers to support new teachers in using these manuals. The second manual is new this year and provides information regarding an inclusive and collaborative school philosophy, which will allow educators to effectively differentiate instruction to reach all students.

The Train-the-Trainer Institute will be held at The Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center in Roanoke, VA, on September 10, 2007, from 8:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. A registration form is attached (Attachment C). School divisions will be responsible for travel, lodging, and meal accommodations. One representative is invited from each division. To secure government lodging rates, you must show your government identification at check-in. Reservations at The Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center must be confirmed by August 7, 2007, at (540) 985-5900. Please complete the registration form for the one person attending the institute by Friday, August 24, 2007, and fax to the attention of Dr. Shelly H. Bazemore at (804) 786-9763.

For additional information, please contact Dr. Bazemore, Office of School Improvement, at (804) 371-0117 or by e-mail to Shelly.Bazemore@doe.virginia.gov.
