New
Standards of Learning for an Optional Mathematics Course: Algebra, Functions, and Data Analysis |
On June 28,
2007, the Board of Education approved Standards
of Learning for a new optional mathematics course, Algebra, Functions, and
Data Analysis. This course may be used
to fulfill the requirements of Advanced Studies, Standard, and Modified
Standard Diplomas.
The Algebra, Functions, and Data
Analysis Standards of Learning
were first drafted in 2006 and 2007. The draft standards were posted for public
comment in March 2007, and three public hearings were held the following
month. Comments and recommendations from
the public comment period were reviewed and incorporated into the Standards of Learning.
The Algebra, Functions, and Data
Analysis Standards of Learning
are designed for students who have successfully
completed an Algebra I course based on the Algebra I Standards of
Learning. Emphasis is placed on building
mathematical models from data generated by practical applications such as those
arising from science, business, and finance.
The new standards may be found at http://www.doe.virginia.gov/VDOE/Superintendent/Sols/mathafda07.pdf.
A curriculum
framework for these Standards of Learning will be developed during fall 2007. An updated list of all courses approved by
the Board of Education for the Advanced Studies, Standard, and Modified
Standard Diplomas may be found at http://www.doe.virginia.gov/VDOE/Instruction/webcrses.html.

and Data Analysis Standards of Learning, please contact Deborah Kiger Bliss, mathematics coordinator, by e-mail at Deborah.Bliss@doe.virginia.gov,
