Increasing
Literacy Skills of Fourth- through Sixth-Grade Students Using |
The Department of Education will host a
one-day institute, Increasing Literacy Skills of Fourth- through Sixth-Grade
Students Using Reading in the Content Areas. During this one-day institute, participants will
learn procedures for content-area reading instruction that incorporate
reading literacy and comprehension in the content areas.

will be held Tuesday, October 30, 2007, at the Doubletree Hotel in

is open to a team of four participants who work with upper elementary students
in each division. Teams should include
one reading, mathematics, science, and history and social science teacher. Superintendents should designate one
individual from the division to register the team of four for this event at http://www.cpe.vt.edu/reg/litskills/. Participants should be willing and able to
share information learned with other colleagues in the school division.
Registration The Office of Continuing and Professional
Education at Virginia Tech will manage online registrations. It is the
responsibility of the division designee to register their team of participants
for the institute and to make any cancellations of lodging arrangements if
needed. The deadline for institute
registration is October 8, 2007. Registration
is conducted on a first-come, first-serve basis. Division designees may register their teams online
for the October 30, 2007, institute at http://www.cpe.vt.edu/reg/litskills/.
Lodging Lodging cost for participants
traveling more than 75 miles one way will be funded by the Department of
Education. The cutoff date for room reservations is October 8, 2007. A block of 150 rooms has been reserved for
October 29, 2007, at the hotel. It is the responsibility of the participants to
make their own reservations. Please

School
divisions are encouraged to cover travel expenses for division participants, as
this cost is not assumed by the Virginia Department of Education.

Authorized Expenses Participants traveling more than 75
miles one way will have lodging costs funded by the Department of
Education. Materials, a continental
breakfast, lunch, and breaks will be provided. Participants are asked to be
present for all meal functions.
