SUBJECT:	Commendation for Antioch Baptist Church

I would like to call to your attention the 2007 General Assemblys commendation of Mathews Countys Antioch Baptist Church as an important preserver of Virginia's legacy including the role played by African-American citizens. Founded in 1869, Antioch Baptist Church has been dedicated to preserving history and culture, including artifacts and documents that reveal the rich history of the Mathews County African-American community. From the sponsorship of a school in 1870 to the establishment of the current Mathews County African-American History Exhibit at the L.W. Wales Center Museum, the church continues to be a community leader.
