SUBJECT:	The Lee-Jackson Scholarship Program

The Department of Education is pleased to announce the Lee-Jackson Scholarship Program sponsored by the Lee-Jackson Foundation of Charlottesville. The objective of the program is to acquaint young people with the historical legacy of two of Virginias most outstanding military figures, General Robert E. Lee and General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson. Three $1,000 scholarships will be awarded in each of Virginias eight Superintendents Regional Study Groups to the juniors or seniors submitting the best essays on the career, character, or some other aspect of the life of either General Lee or General Jackson, or both.

The application and reporting forms are located on the Lee-Jackson Foundation Web site at http://www.lee-jackson.org/. The deadline for students to submit applications and essays to their high school principals is January 11, 2008. Each high school principal will submit the students applications and essays to the local division superintendent. Each superintendent will select the best five essays and forward the applications, essays, and the completed Division Superintendent Summary Form to the chairman of his or her regional screening committee listed on page 11 of the application. The Department of Education does not administer this scholarship; therefore, no information should be returned to the Department.

Principals of all public and nonpublic senior high schools are requested to assist in making students aware of the scholarship opportunity.
