INFORMATIONAL

TO:

Division Superintendents

FROM:

Billy K. Cannaday, Jr.

Superintendent of Public Instruction

SUBJECT:

Phase-out of End-of-Course English: Reading Tests Based on 1995 Standards of Learning (SOL) and Algebra II Tests Based on 2001 SOL

Phase out of End-of-Course (EOC) English: Reading 1995 Tests

As communicated in Superintendent's Memorandum Number 138, dated July 8, 2005, beginning with the fall 2005 administration, the new blueprint for the EOC English: Reading test reflected the 2002 English standards. However, students who had passed the coursework that covers the English SOL for grades 9 through 11 but failed the test prior to fall 2005 have been allowed to continue to take tests that measure the 1995 standards.

Following the spring 2009 administration, the EOC English: Reading test that measures the 1995 SOL will no longer be offered. Beginning with the summer 2009 test administration, all students must take EOC English: Reading tests based on the 2002 standards.

Phase out of Algebra II 2001 Tests

As communicated in Superintendent's Memorandum Number 81, dated May 2, 2003, the 2001 Mathematics SOL included a change in the test blueprint for Algebra II which was implemented in 2005-2006. However, students who passed the coursework for Algebra II prior to fall 2005 and needed to retest have been allowed to continue to take the Algebra II test developed using the older blueprint. This test is known as the Algebra II 2001 test.

Following the spring 2009 administration, the Algebra II 2001 test will no longer be offered. Beginning with the summer 2009 test administration, all students must take the Algebra II 2001 (revised) test based on the newer blueprint.
