The Department of Education is pleased to announce the adoption of the revised Health Education, Physical Education, and Driver Education Standards of Learning. The Board of Education adopted the standards on January 10, 2008, and printed copies will be mailed to school divisions in early fall. The approved standards and review justification charts comparing the content of the April 2001 Standards of Learning and the newly adopted Health Education, Physical Education, and Driver Education standards are available on the Department of Education's website at

Physical Education: http://www.doe.virginia.gov/boe/meetings/2008agenda_items/item_h.pdf;

Health Education: http://www.doe.virginia.gov/boe/meetings/2008agenda_items/item_i.pdf; and

Driver Education: http://www.doe.virginia.gov/boe/meetings/2008agenda_items/item_j.pdf.

The revised standards include edits to enhance clarity, specificity, rigor, alignment of skills and content, and a reflection of current research and practice. In addition, the revised Health Education Standards of Learning place an emphasis on students becoming health literate, self-directed learners who skillfully access valid health information and accept responsibility for personal health promotion and disease prevention. The revised Physical Education Standards of Learning place an emphasis on achieving competency in motor skills, an understanding of biomechanical principles, and a level of fitness that will enhance workplace skills and quality of life. The revised Driver Education Standards of Learning place an emphasis on protecting the environment, using vehicle reference points, and applying space management and vehicle balance concepts to minimize risks.
