Health Education, Physical Education,
and Driver Education Standards of Learning |
The
Department of Education is pleased to announce the adoption of the revised Health Education, Physical Education, and
Driver Education Standards of Learning.
The Board of Education adopted the standards on January 10, 2008, and
printed copies will be mailed to school divisions in early fall. The approved standards and review
justification charts comparing the content of the April 2001 Standards of Learning and the newly
adopted Health Education, Physical
Education, and Driver Education standards are available on the Department
of Education's website at

The revised standards
include edits to enhance clarity, specificity, rigor, alignment of skills and
content, and a reflection of current research and practice. In addition, the revised Health Education Standards of Learning place an emphasis on
students becoming health literate, self-directed learners who skillfully access
valid health information and accept responsibility for personal health
promotion and disease prevention. The
revised Physical Education Standards of
Learning place an emphasis on achieving competency in motor skills, an
understanding of biomechanical principles, and a level of fitness that will
enhance workplace skills and quality of life.
The revised Driver Education
Standards of Learning place an
emphasis on protecting the environment, using vehicle reference points, and
applying space management and vehicle balance concepts to minimize risks.
