The
Department of Education is pleased to announce a USED grant competition for the
Literacy Through School Libraries (LSL) Program. Approximately $18.5 million will be available
for funding, and an estimated 80 grants will be awarded under this
competition. The LSL Program focuses on
providing funding to public school libraries in school divisions with 20
percent or more family poverty. Funds are
used to improve reading achievement through updating the library collection,
expanding Internet connections, purchasing new technology, providing
professional development for library media specialists, and extending school
library hours. This is for school
divisions, charter schools, or state-administered schools that are considered
local school divisions, and not for individual schools.
Applications
are due to USED on Friday, March 7, 2008.
The full application package may be accessed on the program website at www.ed.gov/programs/lsl under
Applicant Info. The Federal Register
Notice can be found at http://www.ed.gov/legislation/FedRegister/announcements/2008-1/012208a.html.
