Billy K. Cannaday, Jr.

Superintendent of Public Instruction

SUBJECT:

Web-based Technical Assistance for the Reporting of Limited English Proficient (LEP) Student Data as Required Under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB)

The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) requires school divisions that receive Title III funds to meet annual measurable achievement objectives (AMAO) that include the following:

         Annual increases in the number or percentage of LEP students making progress in learning English;

         Annual increases in the number or percentage of LEP students attaining full English proficiency by the end of the school year; and

In preparation for meeting reporting requirements stipulated in Sections 3121(a)(2)(3) and 3122(b)of NCLB, the Virginia Department of Education will offer Web-based training that will provide assistance to school divisions regarding the identification of Limited English Proficient (LEP) students, as well as how to access and report the required data.

The training session will be offered on May 29, 2008, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. For directions on how to participate in this Web-based training session, refer to Attachment A.

All divisions are encouraged to participate since the Title III data collection process has been revised for 2008-2009. If you have questions regarding registration, please contact Judy Radford, ESL coordinator, at the Virginia Department of Education, at Judy.Radford@doe.virginia.gov or at (804)786-1692.
