Daily
Pre-trip Safety Inspection Requirement of School Bus Drivers |
This
memorandum is intended to restate the daily pre-trip safety inspection
requirement of school bus drivers contained in Board of Education
regulations. The January 2004, Regulations Governing Pupil Transportation
state:
8 VAC
20-70-380. Pre-trip safety inspection.
The drivers of school and activity
buses shall perform a daily pre-trip safety inspection of the vehicle prior to
transporting children. The items checked
and recorded shall be at least equal to the pre-trip inspection procedure as
prescribed by the Department of Education.
Full
compliance with this Board of Education regulation is required of school
divisions. The procedure prescribed by
the Department of Education is contained in the Preventive Maintenance
Manual, March 2003. This document
has been provided to school divisions and is available on the department's Web
site at:
http://www.doe.virginia.gov/support/transportation/school_buses/
preventive_maintenance_manual.pdf
Training in
the application of the preventive maintenance manual is also provided by the
department each summer at the regional train-the-trainer training sessions.
Please note
that a September 2004, version of the preventive maintenance manual was sent to
school divisions. However, this version
of the manual was not authorized for release and an e-mail was previously sent
to pupil transportation directors rescinding that document and with guidance to
only use the March 2003, document.
